The Rantum Basin is a 600 hectare water basin and one of the most species-rich bird protection areas in northern Germany.
The Rantumbecken is a 600 hectare water basin in Rantum, which was rebuilt by a dike at the end of the 1930s to achieve a constant water level for the originally planned airport for seaplanes. In fact, the Rantum Basin has never been used as a water airport. From then on, a seabird sanctuary was established on the newly acquired natural area, which today attracts ornithologists from all over Germany. The Rantum Basin is now one of the most species-rich bird protection areas in northern Germany. More than 30 species of sea and water birds breed in the various freshwater and saltwater habitats. In the southeast of the Rantum Basin there are several artificial islands, which offer terns and skärfläcka safe breeding opportunities. Especially at the time of the bird migration, thousands of birds can be observed in huge swarms!
You can experience the nature of the Rantum basin on the approx. 9 km long circular dike path. From here the birds can be observed almost undisturbed. Click on the P in the map to get directions. When arriving by bus: Rantum Nord / Dikjen-Deel stop.
