Especially in winter this part of the Havel can be a rewarding site in Berlin, as it doesn't freeze over quickly due to the current, attracting many waterfowl looking for the last remaining open water. Waterfowl that can be observed here include storskrake, Smådopping, småskrake, mindre sångsvan, sångsvan, svärta, sjöorre, knipa, kungsfiskare, havstrut, rördrom, bergand and salskrake.
The interior of the island consists of a wooded nature reserve with mature oak and pine trees and home to various woodpeckers including mellanspett. A visit can be combined with a walk around the Tiefwerder Wiesen on the other side of the Heerstrasse.
