Former gravel pits that have been transformed to a nature reserve with many ponds, reed beds and sandy steep walls.
The Kiesgrube Dünstekoven is a 50-hectare nature reserve that was placed under protection after the end of gravel mining in 1995. The nature reserve has been managed by NABU (BirdLife) Bonn since 1999. In the meantime, a small-scale mosaic of different habitats has developed with open meadows, sandy steep walls, ponds, reed beds and woody islands. It's especially worth a visit because the numerous sand and gravel hills are ideal nesting places for a very special species: the biätare.
The Kiesgrube Dünstekoven is located immediately west of Bonn. Visitors are welcome at the NABU Information Centre (Naturschutzstation Swisttal Waldstraße 47, Swisttal, Dünstekoven).
