The Handzame Broeken area consists of a extensive agricultural area, being mainly pastures, with scattered trees, bushes and willow tree lanes. The Kreekebeek river flows through the area and is a great spot for waterfowl, like Kricka, bläsand and Skedand. The surrounding pastures are good for flocks of tofsvipa. In winter, these pastures are part of the hunting grounds for blå kärrhök. In winter, area is also good for sångsvan.
The scattered (willow) trees are great for observing minervauggla and skogsduva. The scattered bushes and fences are a great spot for breeding species, like svarthakad buskskvätta and buskskvätta.
