The Leopoldskroner Weiher is a small artificial lake south of Salzburg right next to a small forest.
The Leopoldskroner Weiher is a popular destination for tourists and Salzburgians to go for a walk or jogging. There are a few benches around that can be used to rest and watch waterfowl and urban bird species. The lake is home to many native and exotic breeding bird species such as gräsand, mandarinand, grågås, kanadagås, skäggdopping and also hosts a population of knipa.
The southeastern part of the lake is a semi-natural, overgrown area that hosts many bird and fish. In the evening, chances are good for watching gråhäger, ägretthäger, kungsfiskare that regularly hunt for small fish, amphibs and other food sources. During spring and autumn migration the lake is used as a stop-over site for various migratory species before crossing the Alps. Especially after extended rainy periods, birds accumulate and rare species such as drillsnäppa, rördrom or natthäger have been spotted there.
West of the lake is a small forest. The Königswäldchen is home to kungsfågel, nötskrika, större hackspett, kattuggla and other woodland species.
The area is accessible by foot (30min) and bike (12min) from Salzburg city centre. A very nice walk with a view on the castle and Schloss Leopoldskron! In close proximity there´s free parking for cars.
