Beskrivning

Highlights of this area are fairly reliable Diamond Firetail , Mistletoebird , Yellow Thornbill , Wedge-tailed Eagle and Grey Currawong. Most can be seen from a car, or on very short walks along the fairly quiet roads.

The main road - Staughton Vale Road - is lined with big Yellow Gums (Eucalyptus leucoxylon) which can flower heavily at times, drawing in Purple-crowned Lorikeet and Musk Lorikeet and a range of honeyeaters.

At the time of writing (May 2026) a White-fronted Honeyeater is present and settled, offering good views of this Mallee visitor.

Year round residents that are easily seen include Golden Whistler , Superb Fairywren , Grey Fantail , White-throated Treecreeper , White-naped Honeyeater , Yellow-faced Honeyeater , Brown-headed Honeyeater , New Holland Honeyeater , Eastern Spinebill , Spotted Pardalote & Striated Pardalote , Grey Shrikethrush , Laughing Kookaburra , Brown Thornbill Buff-rumped Thornbill Striated Thornbill, Yellow-rumped Thornbill , Weebill , Crimson Rosella , Eastern Rosella , Galah , Long-billed Corella and Little Corella , Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and Australian Raven.

In spring Brush Bronzewing & Common Bronzewing are calling, with Fan-tailed Cuckoo , Rufous Whistler , Olive-backed Oriole and nesting Collared Sparrowhawk and Brown Goshawk. Peregrine Falcon nests nearby too and can be seen and heard. Watch out for the much darker Tasmanian subspecies of Grey Fantail up McLeans Hwy. Gang-gang Cockatoo , Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo , and occasionally Rainbow Bee-eater may be seen on passage.

In summer Sacred Kingfisher calls by day, and at night Southern Boobook and Australian Owlet-nightjar call, and rarely a White-throated Nightjar will call.

In autumn really big flocks of corellas and galahs can be seen, and Flame Robin can be seen on fencelines.

Raptors in the area are quite superb. Wedge-tailed Eagle , Brown Falcon and Nankeen Kestrel are almost daily, Little Eagle , Peregrine Falcon , Australian Hobby are fairly regular, and Spotted Harrier and Black Falcon are seen occasionally in the nearby area.

Look in the grassy farmland for Diamond Firetail ,Yellow-rumped Thornbill and Stubble Quail , Flame Robin in autumn and winter. The farm dams for Australian Wood Duck , White-faced Heron and Masked Lapwing.

The forest along McLean's hwy is best for White-eared Honeyeater , White-throated Treecreeper , Scarlet Robin , Eastern Yellow Robin and Brown Thornbill . On the top of the escarpment is best for Spotted Quail-thrush , but they can be tough at times, and Brush Bronzewing.

One of the most northerly sites in the City of Greater Geelong, this is sometimes the first place for migrating birds to pass through. Some nice local rarities have been recorded, including White-throated Gerygone , Sahul Brush Cuckoo , Scarlet Honeyeater , Satin Flycatcher and White-fronted Honeyeater.

The site is really a collection of hotspots along a couple of roads. Most is private property, but open, so birds can be viewed from road without trespass. Part of the site to the west is the Brisbane Ranges NP. A small block, containing the old tennis court, is public, and the Education Centre can be visited if no-one is staying. There's also water for birds in a few locations. See map.

The author lives in the area and knows most of the neighbours.

The environment is grassy paddocks to the east, and dry woodland of Ironbark, Yellow Gum and Red Box to the west.
