Almost 200 bird species have been recorded on Oxley Creek Common, making it one of the best birding spots in Brisbane.
Despite Oxley Creek Common’s urban location just 7 km from the Brisbane CBD, one quarter of Australia’s native bird species have been spotted onsite. The large open space hosts significant wetlands and is bounded on two sides by Oxley and Stable Swamp Creeks, which together provide habitat for many birds. Among the birds you can encounter on the 6 km walk through the area are White-bellied Sea-Eagle, Brown Falcon, Black-shouldered Kite, Australasian Pipit, Yellow-rumped Thornbill, Striped Honeyeater, Scarlet Honeyeater, Mangrove Gerygone, Varied Triller, Australian Reed-warbler, Plum-headed Finch, Tawny Frogmouth, Scarlet Honeyeater, Straw-necked Ibis, Black-necked Stork and many more.
Oxley Creek Common is located in Rocklea, approximately 7 km from Brisbane’s CBD. The Common is located off Sherwood Road, near the Brisbane and Rocklea Markets. Parking available, enter via Sherwood Road. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. Oxley Creek Common can be accessed by bus, with the nearest stop at the Sherwood Bus Depot (Routes 598 and 599 along Sherwood Road) and is located about 1.8 km from Sherwood Station.
The main development at Oxley Creek Common is the Red Shed, which is beside the car park (plenty of space). The Red Shed has toilets (composting), water, covered seating, and BBQ facilities. The toilets close about 8pm and open very early. The paths are flat, wide and easy to walk or cycle.
