A beautiful park in Sydney with many waterbirds. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded here.
Olympic Park is one of Sydney's best birding spots. The numerous ponds and creeks in the park provide habitat for an impressive array of waterbird species. Over a quarter of Australia’s birds have been observed here. One of the best areas for birding is the Waterbird Refuge. The water level in this pond is regulated and a gate opens twice a day to mimic the tide so that exposed mudflats provide foraging habitat at low tide, and shallow water and man-made islands provide roosting sites at high tide. This attracts many birds and migratory waders.
Other good areas in Olympic Park are the Coastal marsh, Badu Mangroves, the forested parts of the park, riverside walkway, Northern Water Feature, Narawang Wetland and Lake Belvedere. There is an endless amount of fairywrens, cormorants, darters and egrets here. See the birdlist below.
Olympic Park is easy to reach from Sydney. You can take the train to Olympic park and walk to Bicentennial park. There is a large parking. Click on a P in the map for directions or coordinates. The 7 km circular walk indicated on the map is just a suggestion, there are many other paths to follow and areas to explore.
