A 1 km walk in mighty old-growth forest down to a platform overlooking the Towamba Valley. Plenty of birds to see along the way.
The walk to the Nyanba Gorge lookout has three stages. At the first lookout you have views of fast-flowing Myanba Creek. Follow the creek if you choose to keep on walking – it’s a moderate walk that's well worth the effort with the numerous torrents and cascades. The third lookout rewards your efforts with views of the remarkable geology of Myanba Gorge and Bega’s pretty Towamba Valley. Return to the picnic area the way you came, listening out for distinctive ‘creaky gate’ calls of Gang-gang Cockatoo. Among the other birds you can observe in the area are White-eared Honeyeater, Striated Thornbill, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Black-faced Monarch, Satin Flycatcher, Lewin's Honeyeater and Southern Boobook.
Myanba Gorge is in the Coolangubra section of South East Forest National Park. To get there: Head east from Bombala on Bucky Springs Road and continue through Cathart along Coolangubra Forest Way. Alternatively, follow Imlay Road south of Eden. Car parking is available at Myanba Gorge picnic area. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. Myanba Gorge itself has interpretation panels, a covered picnic table, bush BBQs and toilet. Wheelchair-friendly access to the first lookout.
Myanba Gorge lookout is always open, but access may be limited during snowfall events and pedestrian bridges on the walk may be closed at times of flooding.
