A great spot along the American River, with easy trails through mixed oak woodland and a nice variety of birds.
Effie Yeaw Nature Center is a family-friendly nature area with a good vistitor's center, lots of small trails, and access to the Amercan River. The trails wind through a mostly open mixed oak woodland, with widely scattered trees amongst grass and shrubs.
You will see dozens of Acorn Woodpeckers as well as birds such as: Turkey Vulture, Anna's Hummingbird, California Quail, California Scrub-Jay, Oak Titmouse, California Towhee, plus a variety of ducks and gulls on the river. Look near the parking lot for Yellow-billed Magpies.
The Nature Center is located inside Ancil Hoffman Park. As you enter Ancil Hoffman, you'll see a place to pull over and use a machine to buy a parking pass. It's $7 and you put the receipt on your dashboard. Then drive a little further and park near the Nature Center. Once you're there, the trails are flat and easy to walk. The Nature Center has a friendly staff and cool events.
The terrain down near the river is very rocky, but the rest of the trails are quite easy and child-friendly.
The trails are open daily from dawn to dusk. The Nature Center Building (with exhibits, information and live animals) and the book and gift store is open: February through October: Open Tuesday through Sunday: from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. November through January: Open Tuesday through Sunday: from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This location is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
