Description
Witton Lakes are in the Stockland Green area of Birmingham. The two lakes are former drinking water reservoirs. The larger lake is used for boating and the smaller shallower lake is dedicated to wildlife. On the Northern side of the lakes is Witton Lakes Eco Hub, which has a cafe and toilets. The park has open grassland, wooded areas and wildflower meadows, numerous streams lead in and out of the lakes and a community orchard had been planted. The park has a very active friends group.
(*1) (press STAR on map), check large lake in Winter for Zviždara, Čegrtuša and good numbers of Mali gnjurac. Lower fish numbers mean Ćubasti gnjurac are only in low numbers, Labud grbac numbers can be very high for a inner city location and Patka dupljašica and Veliki ronac occasionally turn up.
(*2), the smaller lake can have Krdža, Plovka kašikara, Barska kokica, Liska and Siva čaplja though there is a lot of movement of ducks between each lake. A number of different species of Gull (Laridae) have been seen including Sivi galeb and unusually for such an inland site Troprsti galeb.
(*3), the area of trees at the Eastern end of the park has Čižak and Jelova senica, Dugorepa senica, Plava senica and Velika senica are numerous. During Spring/Summer Obična grmuša, Brezov zviždak, Obični zviždak, Crnoglava grmuša, Gradska lasta, Seoska lasta and Crna čiopa can be seen. Obična čigra regularly turn up on passage.
