23 acres of ancient woodland surrounded by arable fields and other blocks of woodland.
Shut Heath Wood is known for its large old Oaks Standards. Also Sweet Chestnuts, Hornbeam coppice and Hazel. The south east corner can lay wet most of the year and can attract Šumska šljuka. The many old standing dead trees are great for woodpecker species, Brgljez and even Mali detlić. This is one of the key species of this small woodland and does attract birdwatchers in early spring. Winter and early spring is a handy because of the leafless trees.
Finches high in the canopy, small bands of mixed tits, Kraljić and Kratkokljuni puzić. Will keep any birder head spinning from tree to tree. I recommend early mornings every time , nice and quiet, so you can listen out for all the above species.
Shut Heath Wood is located near Great Totham. The woodland is found off Tiptree Rd from Great Braxted Village to Wickham Bishop. A small road leads to a small car park area. Press P on the map for directions.
