A fairly large bay, with rocks for coastal passerines and barrage attractive for waders and sea ducks.
Cardiff Bay is good for birds all year round. Residents include Šljuka kamenjarka, Crna crvenrepka, Morska trepteljka and Veliki ronac. The first can be seen on the green walkways in groups, whilst the rest can be seen basking on the rocky edges.
Bregunica, Gradska lasta and Crna čiopa can all be seen in summer. Gradska lasta nest in ready-made boxes under the eaves of houses by the roundabout barrage entrance. Bregunica nest in the walls of the bay.
Ostrigar can be seen on the barrage all year round, as well as Crvenonogi sprudnik. Zelentarka is another resident around the bay. When the tide goes out, many species, such as Šarena utva can be seen feeding.
Winter visitors include Mali galeb. However, check sightings before going as they tend to move around a lot. Finally, rarities include Crnovrati gnjurac, Ledenjarka and Američka ćubasta patka.
Easy accessible from Cardiff. Plenty of parking areas available. Click on a P in the map for directions. Walking is possible from Penarth to Barrage. Walking is the best way to explore the area.
