An area of marshy meadows and small pools close to the coast, good for waterfowl and waders.
A good selection of ducks, geese and waders can be seen on Boldon Flats in winter and spring. By summer, there is less to see as most of the pools have dried out, or the low water levels become hidden in ditches behind grass. The surrounding hedgerows attract many scrubland and farmland birds.
The easiest way to get to Boldon Flats is by Tyne & Wear Metro (Newcastle to Sunderland branch) to East Boldon and walk or cycle to the site (800 m, under ten minutes for most people). Head northeast from the station along the B1299, and after 200 m take the right turn along Moor Lane. There is also roadside parking space for two or three cars. View only from the road; do not enter the meadows.
