Schübelweiher is a picturesque nature reserve above the center of Küsnacht. Surrounded by a walkway, the artificial lake was once used to produce ice.
It is a breeding place for Siva čaplja that can be observed from the path, and a habitat for waterfowl and for birds living in extensively used meadows. It is also a spawning ground for numerous amphibian species. Bird species that can be observed here include Siva čaplja, Trstenjak rogožar, Poljski vrabac, Barska kokica, Liska, Gluvara, Gradska lasta, Seoska lasta, Crna čiopa, Kobac, Vetruška, Mišar, Čižak, Veliki detlić, Plava senica, Dugorepa senica, Velika senica, Crvendać, Zeba, Obični kos, Čvorak, Vrana, Mandarinka, Veliki ronac, Gugutka, Golub grivnaš, and Bela roda.
There is a public car park next to the lake. However, travelling by bus number 912 from Zürich Bellevue or bus number 919 from the Küsnacht train station (both to the bus station Itschnach-Tägermoos) is recommended. You can also reach Schübelweiher on different walkways leading there from Küsnacht train station in ca. 40 minutes.
From February, Siva čaplja breed on an island. This allows fascinating observations of the feeding and the progress of the young birds from the walking path. Occasionally a Bela roda may be looking for a bite in one of the meadows next to the lake.
