Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Morski galeb, Mrki galeb and Obični galeb. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Mala carska šljuka, Šljuka kamenjarka, Bela sprutka and Polojka.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Obična čigra and Ružičasta čigra, but sometimes also Dugokljuna čigra.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Golemi zovoj can be observed. Small numbers of Bulverova burnica can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Obični zovoj and Plavonogi zovoj.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Delaverski galeb, Islandski galeb and, in 2011, a Žutoglavi gak.
