Description
The Altiplano de Azoia is a windswept dry limestone plateau with wildflowers including gum cistus, green heather, yellow centaury and allseed. Butterflies; swallowtail, Spanish swallowtail. Reptiles; skinks, lizards and whiptail snakes. Mammals; beech marten, Schreiber's bat, horsehoe bats and genet.
Due north from the lighthouse (star mark on the map) there is a display of fossilised dinosaur footprints.
Breeding birds include Ćubasta ševa, shrikes, Prepelica, Velika strnadica, Šumska ševa, Sredozemna crnoglava grmuša, Dugorepa grmuša and Crnogrla strnadica. From the western headland at Cabo Espichel, Obična bluna, Golemi zovoj, Golemi zovoj (diomedea) and Balearski zovoj pass by, and Sivi soko, Siva čiopa, Modrokos and Crna crvenrepka breed on the cliffs. Also Bela čiopa, Prugasti orao and Crni čvorak can be seen in the area.
The area is on a prime migration route. Expect Morski soko, Kos ogrličar, Planinski zujavac and Ričardova stepska trepteljka.
