Description

Lake Elterwater is a brilliant place to pull in while driving along SH1 between Kaikōura and Te Waiharakeke/Blenheim. Consistent presence of Black Swan, Australian Shoveler, Eurasian Coot, White-faced Heron, New Zealand Scaup, Grey Teal, Great Crested Grebe and often Royal Spoonbill and New Zealand Dabchick.

There is also a semi-resident pair of Hoary-headed Grebe for the past few years, and a chance of seeing Spotless Crake and Baillon's Crake. There is a small dock/observation platform extending into the lake, providing excellent views into the reeds and swampy logs.
