Description

Polder Wassenaar is a 17-hectare polder in the northeast corner of the island of Texel, between the Wadden Sea and the Eierland polder. The polder has a brackish water system, where salty seepage from the Waddenzee meets fresh groundwater from the dunes. The terrain is flat and open, with brackish channels, reed beds, and experimental plots. The polder is a testbed for marine aquaculture and adaptive agriculture. The brackish water system attracts salt-tolerant plants and coastal bird species like Grivasta guska, Kašičar, Ostrigar and birds like Muljača, Obična grmuša and Eja močvarica.

Polder Wassenaar is worth a quick scan if you are heading for the nearby must see birding sites De Tuintjes, Robbenjager and Renvogelveld (all described on Birdingplaces). You are not allowed to enter Polder Wassenaar, but from the dike you have several good viewpoints to observe the birds. A telescope is recommended as the birds are at a distance.
