One of the most varied forests on the island of Terschelling. Nice for walking and good for forest birds and sometimes rarities during migration.
The Formerumerbos was once created to prevent the dunes from dominating the area. Many different types of trees were planted, making the Formerumer forest one of the most varied forests on the island. It is the intention that most pine and spruce will be replaced by deciduous wood in the future. The forest is a good area for species of the forest such as Veliki detlić, Jelova senica, Brezov zviždak, Dugokljuni puzić, Čižak, Kraljić and Siva muharica.

The 4.5 kilometers long Formerumerbos-Wilhelminapolder hiking route is well marked. The walking route starts at the shed of Staatsbosbeheer (Duinweg 4 near the village of Lies). A walk can be easily combined with a walk around the the adjacent Liesinger Plak (also described on Birdingplaces)

Hotel – Restaurant de Walvisvaarder has been combining informality with hospitality for more than 50 years. Perfectly centrally located for bird watching on the beautiful island of Terschelling. Close to mudflats, beach, forest and polder. In the hotel, freedom and casualness are combined with hospitality, which brings people back to Terschelling every year. The converted farm in the little village of Lies is an ideal base from which to explore the island. After a day of bird watching or a long walk on the beach, you can enjoy a drink at our bar or on our terrace. When it is a bit colder outside, the fireplace burns in the evening. Cosy, enjoy, a second home….
