Aukštaitija National Park has more than 100 lakes scattered among the woods and hills.
Aukštaitija National Park has many nice areas for birding. More than 200 different bird species have been spotted in the park. The flooded Žemaitiškės meadows on the east coast of Lake Cretuon is one of these areas. The wet meadows are visited by a large number of protected bird species, such as Crnovrati gnjurac, Crna čigra, Čegrtuša, Prepelica, Barski petlić, Prdavac, Šljuka livadarka, Muljača and others. It is a newly emerging natural area, a habitat for birds, which has arisen in the place of the once-defyed meadows. Over time, man-made drying systems began to collapse, resulting in the formation of swampy grassland areas at the site of the former Wyoh stream. It is most convenient to view this area from the observation platform specially located near the village of Reškutėnai. Birds are best observed in April - September.
To reach the observation tower take the road Švenčionėliai - Sena Pašaminė - Reškutėnai. In the village of Reškutėnai, 400 m north of the parish church, turn west to the road leading to Lake Cretuon. 1.6 km on the road and stop near old production buildings. The tower is located in the meadow, 200 m east of buildings and road. Best base to explore Aukštaitija National Park is the village of Palūšė where the park visitor center is based. If you want more information about this trail or other good birding spots in the region, they might be able to help you. Žemaitiškės meadows are about 18 km from Palūšė by car.
