Sea inlet with scenic views and a variety of birds. Worth visiting few times a year as lots of seasonal spieces visit this area.
Carlingford Lough is a glacial fjord or sea inlet. It is situated between Cooley and Mourne Mountains and a great place to see all sorts of waders and gulls. The Carlingford Lough is a Ramsar site (wetlands of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention) and 830.51 hectares in area. It supports nationally important breeding populations. Among the birds you can see are Mala bela čaplja, Ostrigar, Srebrnasti galeb, Velika carska šljuka, Crvenonogi sprudnik, Šljuka kamenjarka, Šarena utva, Žalar blatarić, Crnotrba sprutka, Grivasta guska, Zviždara, Laponska muljača, Veliki labud, Vivak and Krivokljuni sprudnik.
Park your car in Carlingford town. If possible avoid weekends as this is a touristic area and the town is very busy during weekends. Check the tides - during low tide birds will be far away and you will need telescope to spot them. Take a walk along the road looking at the louth - plenty of birds to be seen.
You can also see lots of seals and a dolphin at Greenore Port. In 2020 during Autumn migration a family of Oštrokljuna njorka was spotted resting here for a week.
