Lake Almyros is one of the most important wetlands of western Crete. In the lake you can find many aquatic birds. The lake is not only worth a visit for waterfowl. In Georgioupoulis I found the largest Seoska lasta roost I have seen so far! Among the other birds you can encounter are Krivokljuni sprudnik, Sprudnik migavac, Barska šljuka, Polojka, Sprudnik pijukavac, Vodomar, Bela čiopa, Mala bela čaplja, Morski galeb, Češljugar, Italijanski vrabac and Svilorepi cvrčić.

You can reach the lake from the town when following the road "Palea EO Chanion Rethimnou". The Seoska lasta roost is at the opposite position of the town.
