Description

The Faros lighthouse lies on the northernmost point of Lesvos, and is completely abandoned. The view from this vantage point over the strait towards Turkey is fantastic. It's a great spot to observe migrating raptors and storks that cross the strait to Lesvos during autumn migration. Common species that can be seen are buzzards (Steppe Buzzard, Riđi mišar), harriers (Eja močvarica, Eja livadarka and Stepska eja), Crna lunja, Ribar, Kobac, Jastreb, and storks (Crna roda, Bela roda).

Over the strait, large flocks of Mali zovoj can be seen. Sometimes Golemi zovoj (diomedea) can be spotted within these flocks. Also keep an eye out for dolphins.

The road towards the lighthouse is great for smaller migrants, like Obična crvenrepka, Siva muharica and Pirgasta grmuša. Also, large flocks of swallows, martins and swifts tend to hang around this part of the Korakas headland as well.

Access

The Faros lighthouse is fairly hard to reach with a "common" vehicle; the track is unpaved, steep, and consists of coarse gravel and rocks. It is adviced to only drive here with an offroad vehicle. You can also park your car at the top of the track and walk down towards the lighthouse.
