Easily accessible from the city of Karsruhe and a compact location with a great range of habitats and birds!
The Weiherwald offers a great range of habitats (mixed alluvial woodland, shallow ponds, streams, ditches, meadows, gardens), all in a very small area and close to an urban environment. It is very accessible with paths for pedestrians and cyclists transecting the area. These paths have two benefits: they makes bird observations easy and also mean that the birds are not too shy. A circular walk of the location covers all the habitats mentioned above, with many variations and little detours possible.
There is a notable population of 20 or more Krdža present here in winter (and well into spring).
The Weiherwald is great for observing and hearing Woodpeckers, with five species possible all year round: Srednji detlić , Veliki detlić and Zelena žuna are common here and there is always a chance of Crna žuna and Mali detlić, especially in winter.
The shallow ponds and ditches attract Vodomar, which can be seen fishing or flying from one area of water to another. Potočna pliska are sometimes present, foraging along the water's edges.
Small flocks of Dugorepa senica often roam the area, along with Čižak, Batokljun and the occasional Mali drozd in winter.
Late spring is a great time to listen to Vuga, Mali slavuj and Brezov zviždak. With a bit of luck Crnovrata muharica can also be seen.
Other birds present all year round include Vatroglavi kraljić, Brgljez, Dugokljuni puzić and Siva senica.
In addition to the fantastic birdlife, the Weiherwald is also a hotspot for many (rare) amphibians and insects. No matter what time of year or day, there's always something to enjoy here!
There are two car parking possibilities close to the Weiherwald. Click on a P in the map to get directions.
