Urban forest near the Rhine river in Mannheim.
Waldpark ('forest park') is a recreational forest in the city of Mannheim, while the adjoining Reißinsel is a protected nature reserve. Located near the Rhine river, Waldpark and Reißinsel are characterised by riparian forests. Reißinsel also has meadow orchards. Both areas provide good birdwatching opportunities. Species that can be observed include various woodpeckers (Veliki detlić, Srednji detlić, Mali detlić, Zelena žuna, Siva žuna, and Crna žuna) and other typical forest birds (e.g. Sojka, Brgljez, Dugokljuni puzić). Near the water, you can find Vodomar and Potočna pliska. Waterbirds and gulls are found on the Rhine river.
Note: To protect breeding birds, the Reißinsel area is closed to visitors from the beginning of March till the end of June. Waldpark can be crowded especially during weekends.
Waldpark is close to the city centre of Mannheim and can be easily reached by bike or public transport. The closest tram stops are Diesterwegschule (1) near the northern end of the area and Rheingoldhalle (2) in the south (both served by tram line no. 3). There is also a parking in the area, press P on the map for directions.
In the Waldpark area, there is a dense network of trails, and various different routes are possible. A circular route leads around the Reißinsel area. Please note that in the Reißinsel nature reserve, visitors are not allowed to leave the paths and to bring bikes or dogs.
