Description

The lake Hornsee - also known as Emma-Süd - is a former brown coal excavation site. It’s part of the Kahler Seenplatte, a cluster of lakes shaped by industrial history and now reclaimed by nature and recreation. There is a little path along the Hornsee where you are likely to see Ćubasti gnjurac and Liska (or if you luck out like me, you might see a Belorepan flying through) that leads to the path along the river Main where you can see Veliki vranac, Kanadska guska , Divlja guska, and possibly even Veliki ronac. You can circle around to where the river Kahl meets the river Main and follow along the Kahl to see Gluvara and Vodomar.

Access

The Hornsee is located between Großkrotzenburg in Hesse and Kahl am Main in Bavaria. You can get there by parking on a nearby street or you can take the train or bus and walk there, though it is quite the walk (~30 minutes). Unfortunately there is no bus stop that is genuinely nearby. There is a path that leads to the Hornsee just before you would leave Kahl to drive to Großkrotzenburg. The circular walking route shown on the map is about 2,5 km.
