This dam located at the mouth of the river Eider gives great views of a breeding colony of Arktička čigra.
The Eider Barrage (Eider Sperrwerk) is located at the mouth of the river Eider near Tönning on Germany’s North Sea coast. Its main purpose is protection from storm surges by the North Sea. It is Germany’s largest coastal protection structure. On both sides of the Eider dam (north and south) you will find breeding colonies Arktička čigra and Obični galeb. Even without binoculars, you can see hundreds of birds, including nests, eggs and chicks in the right season. Further from the dam you can see with a bit of luck many Gavka.
There is a parking space on the dam itself. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
