Description

Borkum is the largest of the East Frisian islands and therefore scenically varied and attractive. There are great hiking trails, a harbor and beautiful dunes and beaches. This Wadden Sea island is a resting point for many birds. Many beautiful bird species can be found on the Wadden side of Borkum, such as Kašičar, Arktička čigra and Obična čigra. On the beach side you can see gulls, ducks, terns and if you are lucky Riđogrli morski gnjurac, Veliki pomornik or Vitorepi pomornik.

Countless waders like Laponska muljača, Ostrigar, Velika carska šljuka, Crvenonogi sprudnik and Crnotrba sprutka scurry through the mudflats and songbirds rest in bushes and dunes. Due to the migration of small birds, the island has a high potential for the observation of rarities. In northwesterly winds, seabirds such as shearwaters or Obična bluna, Oštrokljuna njorka, Tankokljuna njorka and Troprsti galeb can appear, in easterly winds Siberian warblers.

Access

The German island of Borkum is located in the North Sea and can be reached by ferry boat within two hours or by catamaran within one hour from Emden. Another possibility is by ferry-boat from Eemshaven in The Netherlands. See the link to the ferry-schedules below. Unlike all other East Frisian Islands except Norderney, Borkum does not ban cars. But the best way to explore the island is by bike. There are several bicycle rental companies.
