What looks like a big lake in the middle of the city is actually a dammed river. Interesting birds keep popping up every now and then.
The Outer Alster ("Alster" is the name of the river, "Außen" means Outer) represents a large water body located on a migratory bird route within a metropole region. Frequent breeding and feeding birds like Gluvara (of course), Ćubasti gnjurac, Liska, Barska kokica, Veliki vranac or Obični galeb are known from many places. Especially during winter half of the year water birds of all kind can be expected. Several species of ducks (including Crni turpan, Morska crnka, Krdža), divers (Riđovrati gnjurac, Crnovrati gnjurac, Ušati gnjurac), gulls (all common species) and terns ( Crna čigra, Obična čigra) can be observed with a bit of luck and scope. Even Belorepan has been seen gliding over. Recorded rarities include Veliki pomornik and Belokrila čigra.
The Außenalster is surrounded by a well accessible foot trail and biking lanes. Public transports connects to any side of the water.
Take the position of the sun into account when planning your trip.
