Description

Portimojärvi is one of the best bird lakes and one of the most valuable wetlands in the area. The lake is actually a regulated extension of the Tengeliöjoki River. Many birds breed in the area and Portimojärvi is also a valuable as a gathering area for waterfowl during migration as in the summer closing season. Among the breeding birds are Zviždara, Riđovrati gnjurac, Veliki ronac, Šiljkan, Plovka kašikara, Arktička čigra, Obični galeb, Mali galeb, Ćubasta patka and Mali ronac. Other birds you can encounter are Veliki labud, Ušati gnjurac, Patka dupljašica, Ždral, Polojka and Sprudnik migavac. But many more, see the birdlist below. Best time for a visit is from half May until the start of autumn migration.

The bird tower is located north of Lake Portimojärvi, on the Aavasaksa-Raanujärvi road (932), about 8 km from Aavasaksa towards Raanujärvi. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
