A tiny village on the bank of the river Emajõgi in Alam-Pedja Nature Reserve.
The village of Palupõhja is surrounded by wetlands and forests. A great view opens from the riverbank over the meadows of Emajõgi, which are nicely flooded in the early spring, attracting numerous waterbirds. For instance, during the flood over 15 species of ducks and geese are gathering in the area and it is likely to observe an Ribar catching fish in a close distance. At this time the soundscape is also very rich in birds. You can see several raptor and woodpecker species here. The last ones are especially active in the village and in the near surroundings. Some interesting birds you can hear or see in here are Mala šljuka, Šljuka livadarka, Barski petlić, Šiljkan, Grogotovac, Mali labud, Mala sova, Dugorepa sova, Planinski detlić and Crna žuna.
The site can only be accessed from the Tallinn-Tartu highway. From the village of Valmaotsa you have to turn to the south to get on the road heading to Palupõhja. After about 11 km of this gravel road, you will reach to the parking lot, which is shown on the map below.
