Description
Luitemaa Nature Reserve is a wetland complex on the south-western coast of Estonia that consists of diverse coastal and inland habitats including shallow sea, capes and islands, coastal meadows and reed-beds. The coastal meadows near Võiste have shallow waters that attract large amounts of dabbling ducks (Čegrtuša, Gluvara, Grogotovac, Zviždara, Krdža and so on), Šarena utva and swans. The wide coastal meadows and lagoons are favored by geese. Most common are Divlja guska and Belolika guska. Rarer gooses like Lisasta guska, Kratkokljuna guska, Kanadska guska, Guska crvenovoljka, Grivasta guska, Guska glogovnjača (tundranska) and Guska ljigarica are often found during migration.
The sandbanks and lagoons are great spots for wading birds. Most common breeding birds are Crvenonogi sprudnik, Žalar blatarić, Ostrigar, Zlatni vivak, Vivak, and Sprudnik ubojica. During migration Crni sprudnik, Sabljarka, Crnotrba sprutka, Mala sprutka, Seda sprutka, Velika sprutka, Riđa sprutka, Velika carska šljuka and Mala carska šljuka have been recorded.
