Description
Borreby Mose is a large area with bog and reedbeds. Around the bog are extensive meadows used for grazing. Despite attempts to drain and cultivate, today the site is protected under Natura 2000 and serves as a vital refuge for birds. The reedbeds host breeding Vodeni bik, Eja močvarica, Brkata senica, Trstenjak rogožar, Trstenjak crvrkutić and occasionally rarities like Obični cvrčić and Veliki trstenjak. The wet meadows, shallow pools and muddy edges attract many waders and meadow-birds like Muljača, Sprudnik ubojica, Vivak, Crvenonogi sprudnik, Ostrigar, Žalar blatarić, and Sabljarka.
During migration thousands of geese roost in the area, joined by ducks like Šiljkan, Plovka kašikara, Krdža and Ćubasta patka. Winter brings Mali ronac, Patka dupljašica, and Poljska eja. A regular resident is Belorepan. Less common birds that visit Borreby Mose include Velika čigra and Crvenovrata liskonoga. Every year rarities turn up in the area, especially during migration. For example Crnogruda sprutka and Crna roda have been observed.
