Venford Reservoir is situated in Dartmoor National Park on high moorland.
The reservoir and moor areas are very open and susceptible to possible bad weather. The heavily wooded river valley is more sheltered. You can expect to see povodni kos, kanja, čižek, possible veliki žagar and many other breeding moorland and woodland birds. Most of the moorland area has open access and following prolonged periods of rain can become very wet and swampy. The river valley woodland is to the North East below the reservoir dam.
The town of Ashburton is on the A38 between Exeter and Plymouth, on the South West edge of the town come off on sliproad signed Ashburton/River Dart Country Park, follow this road and on passing the Country Park take a left turn onto minor road signed Holne, on reaching the village of Holne look for signs to Venford or Hexworthy.
