Most northerly Norfolk Broad, SSSI & National Trust property. Butterfly garden, boat trips, windmill. Extensive lake, water meadows and reedbeds. 133 hectares.
in Horsey Mere freshwater, marsh and sea birds can be seen (there is a sea beach with seal viewpoint nearby). Look for Mokož, liska, čopasti ponirek, bobnarica, egrets, rjavi lunj, togotnik, žerjav, žličarka, svilnica, brkata sinica, bičja trstnica, srpična trstnica, trstni strnad and sabljarka. črni martinec, snežni strnad, grivasta gos and laponski ostroglež may appear in winter.
Reeds are cut for thatch from December to April and brkata sinica often feed in the resulting stubble.
Horsey is 15 miles north of Great Yarmouth, via Caister and Winterton. It is 22 miles northeast of Norwich. Drive east on A47 then left in Acle and continue through Clippesby and Martham. Nearest rail station is Acle, ten miles away. Nearest bus stop, Somerton, 2 miles.
Access by yacht or motor boat via Hickling Broad and River Thurne. Access restricted in winter to protect wildfowl from disturbance. Ross's boat trips offer one hour wildlife cruises from Horsey. See NT link below.
