Forested glen with ornamental loch and islands in Dee valley. One of the best places in Scotland to see Wildcats.
In Glen Tanar 106 bird species have been seen, passerines and raptors prominent. planinski orel, pepelasti lunj, skobec, rjavi škarnik, kanja, sokol selec, močvirska uharica, rumenoglavi kraljicek, krivokljun, čižek, črnoglavi muhar. Wildcats possible, also Red Deer, Otter, and Pine Marten. Red Grouse and ruševec occur on higher ground, but although formerly a stronghold for divji petelin, these have unfortunately now died out.
Glen Tanar is 6 km (4 miles) SW of Aboyne, which is on the A9 road east of Ballater. The nearest bus service is in Aboyne (6 km). Click on the P in the map to get directions to parking and visitor centre. The circular walk indicated on the map is about 8,5 km.
