National Nature Reserve of nearly 1,000 ha, a raised peat bog with open water, marshes, heath, scrub and fen areas.
132 bird species have been recorded on the English side of the Mosses alone. Including škrjančar, sokol selec, močvirska uharica, rjavi lunj, pepelasti lunj, velika bela čaplja, mala bela caplja, prosnik, sloka, podhujka and veliki strnad. Many species of dragonfly, damselfly and 32 butterfly species. Also adders, common lizards, water voles and otters. There is a bird hide and a viewing tower. Good for dragonflies and škrjančar in May.
The Mosses are almost midway between Shrewsbury and Wrexham. From the A49 road, go west in Prees and follow signs to Whixham marina. Parking available on the English side next to the canal, see P on map below. Nearest bus stop 3 miles away, nearest train station at Prees, 4 miles. Access by boat or kayak or canoe along the canal. Wheelchair access.
