A 7 km long backwater branch of the river Aare between Biel and Büren an der Aare. The most important floodplain landscape in the Berner Mittelland.
Well over 230 species of birds have been recorded in the Häftli, almost 80 of which are breeding birds. Important breeding birds are mali ponirek, čopasti ponirek, črni škarnik, Mokož, vodomec, mali detel, slavec and . The Häftli is an important wintering site for waterfowl, including several hundred kreheljc, konopnica and žvižgavka. Various species of herons, birds of prey, waders and numerous songbirds can be observed as they pass through.
Although the area was significantly changed by the two Jura water corrections and in particular by the construction of the Nidau–Büren Canal, the characteristic floodplain elements are still largely present today.
The Häftli is located between Biel and Büren an der Aare. You can reach the area on foot from Safern or Büren an der Aare. If you arrive by car, use the parking spaces at the Safern sports field (15 minutes walk from there). Click on the P in the map for directions to the parking. In the northern part of the old river arm there is a bird observation tower.
