From August to October, numerous thermal gliding birds can be observed passing through the skies around Gurten. The best time is late August and early September. Then large numbers of Sršenar are possible. With a bit of luck, črna štorklja will also pass by. Other regular species are: kanja, skobec, kragulj, navadna postovka, škrjančar, rjavi škarnik, črni škarnik, ribji orel, močvirski lunj, rjavi lunj and bela štorklja. In later autumn large flocks of grivar pass by. From time to time planinski hudournik can be observed on food flights.

Access
The Gurten hill is located directly south of Bern city center. The best way is to take the Gurtenbahn funicular that runs from the city to the Gurten. From there it is only a 10 minutes walk to the viewing and observation point.
