Järnlunden is a relatively large lake, with a large inland archipelago (ca 30 islands).
In and around Järnlunden more than 200 bird species have been recorded. The lake has a population of breeding polarni slapnik, čopasti ponirek, kanadska gos, veliki žagar, srednji žagar, zvonec and čopasta črnica. veliki kormoran, siva čaplja, sivi galeb srebrni galeb, rečni galeb and navadna čigra breed on Islands and cobs in Järnlunden. During spring migration many of these can be found larger number among them. zlatouhi ponirek, rjavovrati ponirek, mali galeb and polarna čigra are sometimes found. It is not rare to find some marine waterfowl resting on the lake.
On the wetlands around the lake dabbling ducks are often found and konopnica breeds. Wading birds can sometimes be seen at "dal" when the area is flooded. Waders sometimes land on cobs in the lake during harsh weather in the autumn migration. At viggeby, hacklboön and Hallstad ängar, there are large areas of deciduous forests. In and around these forests some quite rare birds can be found. Like: mali muhar, Krekovt and šmarnica.
There are many places to get a good view of the lake. Some of them are: Hallstad ängar, Rimforsa, Hackelboön, and Viggeby. All of these have good parking spots. In Viggeby there's a new birding platform (built during the winter 2020/2019) next to a small wetland. There's a large network of trails connecting most parts of Järnlunden.
