The area around Killingholmen is a scenic area where the river Storån meets the narrow bay Slätbaken. Around Hov you can find open coastal meadows.

Description

The birds start to arrive at Killingholmen in February when the ice starts to loose its grip on the coastal waters. Then ducks start to rest in the shallow parts of the bay; čopasta črnica (at most 100) and around 1000 veliki žagar can be found. Also the rarer winter ducks like kreheljc, sivka, mali žagar, rjavka and srednji žagar. A few hundred geese and around 100 labod pevec feed on the areas fields and coastal meadows around march. In March the other early spring birds also arrive; poljski škrjanec, grivar, škorec and priba. In spring you can find brkata sinica in the reed beds.

Year round skobec, belorepec and kanja are the common predatory birds. But planinski orel, pepelasti lunj and rjavi škarnik pass by the area. Most common passerine birds arrive in March/April. Slätbaken is a stopping point for passerine birds, which makes it common to find uncommonly early hribski škrjanec and carar.

From late February and in March the owls in the area can be heard calling. lesna sova mali skovik and velika uharica are sometimes heard. In March more geese start to arrive and not only the common kanadska gos and siva gos. Also beločela gos (at most 67) and belolična gos (at most 100). njivska gos, Njivska gos (serrirostris) and kratkokljuna gos are sometimes found. Also mali labod has been observed.

On the coastal meadows large amounts of passerine bird start to rest in the end of March and in April. travniška cipa, bela pastirica, repnik are the most common. Among these obalna vriskarica is regularly seen. In the large grassy areas močvirska uharica can be found. On the coastal meadows mali martinec, pikasti martinec, rdečenogi martinec, žvižgavka, konopnica, žličarica, močvirski martinec, zlata prosenka, kozica and čopasti ponirek. Most common dabbling ducks are found but only kreheljc is numerous (at most 70). At the Torpa damm reglja and dolgorepa raca have been seen, along with smaller amounts of other ducks.

In april large amounts of thrushes move past the fields and coastal meadows. Hundreds of cikovt, vinski drozg, brinovka and carar are seen. In the end of May and April most birds disappear, except for the breeders.

In May the latest passerine birds, and night active birds arrive. On the fields močvirski lunj, sokol selec and kosec are found. rjavi galeb sometimes rest on the coastal meadows in May. škrlatec often sings here. On the meadows belolična gos, siva gos, kanadska gos, konopnica, rdečenogi martinec, priba, čopasti ponirek, čopasta črnica, zvonec and liska breed. In the area mali detel, rjavi srakoper, kreheljc and labod pevec breed. At Storåns river mouth you can observe vodomec.

During autumn Hov strandängar becomes better for birding. From July the area is a good site for wading birds such as priba, veliki škurh, komatni deževnik, mali deževnik, mali martinec, kozica, zlata prosenka, zelenonogi martinec, rdečenogi martinec, togotnik, močvirski martinec and pikasti martinec. These are all common, while mali prodnik, spremenljivi prodnik, mali škurh, Temminckov prodnik and srpokljuni prodnik are more rare.

Other wetland birds are often found. Among the rarer birds vodomec, kaspijska čigra, modra taščica and velika bela čaplja can be noted. Large amounts of gulls, geese and terns can be found, especially siva gos which some years have been found as numerous as 3000.

Large amounts of passerine birds are found in the meadow areas. The most numerous passerine birds are lišček (250 at most), kmečka lastovka (500 at most), repaljščica, kupcar, škorec (600 at most). Later in autumn mali ponirek, puklež, severni repnik, zlatouhi ponirek, mali žagar and rjavka are sometimes found.
