Description
Just outside the village of Vegas Altas extensive rice fields start. The fields receive important winter concentrations of žerjav and several species of waders like črnorepi kljunač, komatni deževnik, polojnik, zlata prosenka, mali prodnik, zelenonogi martinec, togotnik, spremenljivi prodnik, mali martinec, pikasti martinec, kozica and močvirski martinec. During the migratory passages, you can also see other wintering birds such as modra taščica, vriskarica or trstni strnad. Other birds you can spot in the area are južni veliki srakoper, rdeči bengalček, rečna astrilda and smrdokavra. Also many wintering birds of prey (sometimes in high densities) like rjavi lunj, pepelasti lunj, rjavi škarnik, lebduh, mali sokol and močvirska uharica. Best times for a visit are winter and spring, from November to May. From June to October it can be very quiet on the fields.
