Description
The Embalse de Arroyo Conejo is a reservoir that is located in the southeast of the province of Badajoz. The wetlands host many birds and is a Ramsar site. The surroundings of the reservoir are also rich in birds. They are formed by meadows of oaks and holm oaks, and some more wooded areas of cork oak. Among the most important species of birds that you can see are the colonies of črnonoga čigra, rjava komatna tekica and črna čigra, as well as winter concentrations of žerjav. The region is a good place to observe steppe birds, despite not being considered an Iberian steppe area. On the fields near the dam often velika droplja, mala droplja and črna stepska kokoška are seen. And watch the skies too, because španski kraljevi orel is a regular guest. On the north side of the reservoir is a visitor center with an observatory. After visting the center, the best way to see most birds is driving or cycling along the reservoir and its surroundings. The suggested route on the map is good for many birds, but sometimes roads are closed to protect the birds, or not all areas are accessible. So please respect the signs and the properties of the people living here. Having said that, if you hike around the area you will see many birds of the extended birdlist below.
