Located by the town of Pirot, where the valley forms a significant migration corridor and the bird fauna has a distinct Mediterranean flavour.
Kompenzacioni bazen (compensation pool) has more than 220 species recorded by a single local birder, Ivan Medenica.
Locally common birds include vriskarica, čopasti škrjanec, rjava penica and prosnik. Followed by frequent kratkonogi skobec, pisana penica, bledi vrtnik, kobilar, divja grlica, kosec, podhujka and puklež.
Local rarities include mouth-watering birds such as kodrasti pelikan, zlatouhi ponirek, puščavska penica, tamariskovka and laški škrjanec.
