Kapetanski Rit is a huge fish farm in the north Bačka region.
Kapetanski Rit is one of the biggest fish farms in Serbia and attracts many bird species like ribji orel (on migration), rjavi lunj, belorepec, and many duck and reed warbler species. The smaller and shallower ponds are the perfect place to look for shorebirds, like sabljarka, črnorepi kljunač, polojnik, veliki škurh, mali škurh, togotnik and rdečenogi martinec. The fish farm is really huge, so be prepared to spend at least several hours, if not the whole day. Follow the asphalt road that passes along the fish farm, look for birds from the car, park occasionally, and detour shortly to visit smaller ponds scattered on both sides of the road, often in the second line so make sure not to miss them, as they are usually very productive.
Kapetanski Rit Fish Farm is private property, ask for entry permission and make an appointment in advance. Fish farms can be accessed from Velebit village from the south and Male Pijace village from the north. Click on the 'P' marking for directions.
