Salt lagoons to the west of the city of Aveiro, only minutes from the center.
The Salgado de Aveiro is a vast area of salt exploration located in the Ria de Aveiro. The salt pans, although an artificial habitat, are of great value to waterfowl, allowing a balance between the economic exploitation of a resource and the conservation of natural values. Ria de Aveiro shelters during the winter more than 20.000 migratory birds. A good place for birding, but note that you have to make a reservation to get in (see the info below). Among the birds you can see are duplinska kozarka, plamenec. mali ponirek, polojnik, beloceli deževnik, komatni deževnik, mali škurh, črnorepi kljunač, kamenjar, spremenljivi prodnik, mali prodnik, mali martinec, rdečenogi martinec, mala čigra, kričava cigra and rjavi lunj.
Easy to reach from the city center of Aveiro. If you come by the A25, at the Aveiro downtown exit, you will find the salt pans of Aveiro. Also just a 10 minutes walk from the train station. Note: You need to make a reservation for a guided visit. Contact +315) 915 390 990 or mail to visitas@salinasaveiro.com. The visit lasts approximately 60 minutes and costs 5,00€ /adult.
