Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like rumenonogi galeb, rjavi galeb and rečni galeb. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like mali škurh, kamenjar, peščenec and mali martinec.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly navadna čigra and rožnata čigra, but sometimes also kričava cigra.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of rumenokljuni viharnik can be observed. Small numbers of siva bulverica can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like atlantski viharnik and Barolo Shearwater.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like progastokljuni galeb, polarni galeb and, in 2011, a Yellow-crowned Night Heron.
