Description

The Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world with a depth of about 1000 – 2000 m. The bottom of the canyon is still at 2000 m above sea level and edges of the canyon are at 3000 – 4000 metres above sea level. The Mirador Cruz del Condor is a stunning lookout located in the Colca Canyon at an elevation of 3270 m. At the mirador you can see Andean Condor from very close by in the morning. The best time to see the flight of the Condor’s is between 8 am to 10 am.

In the Colca Canyon region you can see many other bird species as well, for example Golden Grosbeak, Ornate Tinamou, Giant Hummingbird, Variable Hawk, American Kestrel, Aplomado Falcon, Mountain Caracara, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Mountain Parakeet and Andean Flicker.

Access

The Colca Canyon is a canyon of the Colca River in southern Peru, located about 160 km northwest of Arequipa. The Mirador Cruz del Condor is accessible by foot from the nearby parking. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. There are some stairs but the accessibility is good. The Canyon itself is only accessible by foot. To explore the canyon walking sticks and good physical condition are advised.
