Description

Tungog Rainforest is the lush lowland tropical forest surrounding Tungog Lake in the Kinabatangan region of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. It’s best known as the home of the Tungog Rainforest Eco Camp (TREC)—a community-run conservation and ecotourism project that offers immersive jungle experiences while supporting local livelihoods and reforestation efforts. Camp platforms are designed for serious birders and wildlife photographers, who can observe more than 200 species of birds in the surrounding floodplain forests.

Common residents include Hooded Pitta and the Black Crowned Pitta. Several hornbill species are present in the forest around the Eco Camp: White-crowned Hornbill, Wrinkled Hornbill, Oriental Pied-Hornbill and the Rhinoceros Hornbill are the most common. Colourful birds such as the Black-and-red Broadbill, Banded Kingfisher and the Diard's Trogon are also not uncommon sights. On very rare occasions the Bornean Ground-cuckoo and Giant Pitta have been observed.
